around the zone
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Zone of Alienation covers an area of 2,600 sq. km in Ukraine. These images were taken at different locations around the zone, aside from the Pripyat area. In addition to Pripyat and Chernobyl town, there were around 80 villages evacuated within a few weeks of the disaster. These homes were occupied by generations of families, some for hundreds of years, prior to the accident. They had only a matter of 2-3 weeks to pack up everything that they new and move to an unfamiliar place. Some of these images were taken in one such village, showing shoes, school books and household items left behind by fleeing families.
The first image is a herd of endangered & wild Przewalski's Horses ran through a field next to us on the final day at sunset. These horses were introduced to the exclusion zone in the 90's as an experiment to discover the effects of radiation on inhabitants of the area. They have not only survived, but have adapted and now are thriving, with numbers being estimated in the 200's.
The final two images were taken in what was once a village administration office, but later became a base for liquidators brought in to clean up after the accident. We slept on the floor of this building one night.
