The Abandoned Chinese Temple in Bangkok
I visited this temple in mid-morning after hearing about it from a friend who lives in the area. Located in Bang Na in southeastern Bangkok, this Chinese-style Buddhist temple is over 100 years old. It has been abandoned for some time, though the exact number of years I do not know. Although Thailand is obviously chock-full of Buddhist temples, finding an abandoned one is a rarity. This is the first I've found.
The parking lot in front is fairly active, with a husband & wife washing their dog in the sink area in front while I was there shooting pictures. There are still offerings made at some of the statues & altars on the outside, but the interior looks to be rarely entered, although it is open. It's seen as very bad luck to abandon a temple, but if there is no money coming in, there isn't much of a choice for the congregation. I feel pretty certain that this place is perceived to be haunted, as most abandoned places are seen that way, but especially a temple which has a lot of negativity associated with dereliction of a place of worship.
The light in the main temple area was just right for some dramatic images when combined with the small flooded area on the floor & the unsettling green-eyed tiger altar.
I enjoyed exploring this place and shooting some pictures & would love to know more about it. I will have to do some interviewing next time I am in the area, which thankfully isn't far from home.
