The Abandoned Village of Death
"The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?"
-Edgar Allen Poe

Sitting inland, about 15 km from the sunny holiday beaches of Cha-am, Petchaburi Province in South-central Thailand, is a sprawling complex of an abandoned townhouse-village.
I decided to go desaturated with this series at it feels appropriate, given the content.
There are numerous stories and local legends, as well as the usual rumors and gossip surrounding this place, involving murders, charred remains and nefarious spirits in dark cloaks seen surrounding a burnt-out bus once left sitting on the property. Another bit of whisper is that an entire family was murdered here, although that is more difficult to believe as the village never opened, so the likelihood of families ever spending significant time here is low. But who knows? Such horrific things have been verified to have occurred at other similar locations, so it is not so unbelievable that it could happen here as well.
I've also been told of a young woman who was raped & murdered here, an acquaintance of a friend of mine, but once again this is hard to verify in print.
The time period of construction coincides with the 'tom-yum-goong' 1997 Asian financial crisis, in which multitudes of similar projects were stopped in mid-construction a quarter-century ago. It is likely that this location of victims is a victim itself of regional economic woes.
What I do know is how I felt when walking the grounds and through the rooms of the derelict structures, and it was not altogether happy. 'Uneasy' or 'unsettling' would be better descriptors. The graffiti, although less than visionary, added to the unsettling ambiance, with the most ominous being the simple scrawling of 'Death' with a haphazard skull & crossbones, perhaps a warning? Or is it just some bored teenagers doing what bored teenagers do? Maybe a bit of both.
Unnerving sights aside, I did enjoy exploring this place as I usually do with sprawling decay set amongst lush tropical surroundings. A friendly buffalo herder came through with 18 or so of his herd, and was kind enough to let me shoot some photos of his expensive beasts (1.7 million baht for the lot he said).
I do wish to know more about this location, so if anyone has any verified information, please send it along. Until then, I have these pictures and my instincts which tell me that this place has some tragic stories to tell.
