the kyiv crematorium
The oddly shaped, neomodernist designed Kyiv Crematorium is located in Baikove Cemetery’s “Memory Park". It was constructed in the 1960's amid much controversy, as the idea of the incineration of bodies brought about terrible visions of the Holocaust, still fresh on the minds of many local residents. In consideration of this, the architects constructed the site in such an unusual style to avoid any association with the process of cremation.
Though this site is certainly not 'abandoned', it is quite unique and merits a visit for anyone in Kyiv who happens to be interested in avante garde architecture, or general weirdness.
